Challenge
Colombia ranks among the top crypto adopters in Latin America — but bridging digital assets with traditional finance remains complex. From custody and staking to token issuance and cross-border payments, infrastructure gaps slow institutional and retail adoption.
Wenia, a subsidiary of Grupo Cibest (formerly Grupo Bancolombia), launched in May 2024 to close that gap. Regulated under a Bermuda Monetary Authority Class F license, Wenia needed a platform that could deliver security, compliance, and scalability — at retail speed and enterprise scale.
Solution
“For us, Fireblocks is the secure bridge between traditional infrastructure (Web2) and blockchain infrastructure (Web3)”
Wenia built its entire digital asset stack on Fireblocks, including:
- Custody of client and treasury assets
- Staking infrastructure (e.g., SOL staking)
- Wallet workflow automation via Fireblocks Automation
- Secure Web3 access to send crypto to external addresses and perform onchain operations
- Token issuance — including Wenia’s stablecoin, COPW
Fireblocks’ tokenization engine supports Wenia’s long-term roadmap around institutional digitization, treasury management, and cross-border payments — all critical to Colombia’s evolving payments ecosystem.
To complement this, Wenia integrated Fireblocks with their AWS-based infrastructure. “Our core technology is supported by AWS, and our custody and Web3 core is supported by Fireblocks,” Mauricio Serna, CTO at Wenia notes.
Their backend includes:
- EC2 for Fireblocks cosigners
- EKS to power Wenia's crypto flows
- Aurora, DynamoDB, AmazonMQ, and GuardDuty for availability and compliance
Wenia also deployed AWS Nitro enclaves to safeguard key signing processes. “Using Nitro allows us to have high availability... so users can always access their crypto securely,” Mauricio Serna, CTO at Wenia added.
Results
Just over a year from launch, Wenia has already achieved:
- 16,000+ verified users
- $65M+ in transaction volume
- 64% month-over-month growth
- Support for 11+ assets, including COPW, USDC, BTC, AVAX, and SOL
- Live staking and yield features with SOL and USDC
As of Aug 2025
Next up: scaling cross-border stablecoin payments (COPW, USDC, EURC) and driving tokenization initiatives across Colombia’s institutional finance landscape — all powered by Fireblocks and AWS.
