Agentic Commerce: Definition, How It Works, and Why It Matters
What Is Agentic Commerce?
Agentic commerce is a model of digital trade in which AI agents autonomously initiate, negotiate, and complete commercial transactions on behalf of humans or organizations, without requiring step-by-step human approval for each action. Instead of a person manually browsing, selecting, and checking out, an AI agent handles the full workflow end to end. The agent sources the best option, executing payment, confirming delivery, and reconciling records. This is done all within policy-defined guardrails set in advance by the user or organization.
The term builds on the broader concept of agentic AI, in which large language models (LLMs) (such as Claude and Chat GPT) and autonomous software agents are given goals and tools. Then they are left to pursue those goals across multi-step workflows. In commerce, that means agents capable of holding wallets, spending funds, and settling transactions in real time, across borders, and at scale.
Agentic commerce is distinct from traditional e-commerce automation, which typically relies on rule-based workflows or human-triggered scripts. In agentic commerce, the agent reasons, adapts to context, and acts on behalf of its principal with a degree of judgment.
How Agentic Commerce Works
At a technical level, agentic commerce requires several interconnected components working together:
AI agents with financial permissions
The agent must be provisioned with access to a wallet or payment credential. This might be a non-custodial wallet, an embedded wallet, or access to a stablecoin balance that the agent can draw from within policy limits.
Autonomous payment execution
When the agent decides to make a purchase or settle an obligation, it needs infrastructure that can execute that payment programmatically, without human sign-off on each individual transaction. Policy and governance controls

Traditional e-commerce automation covers things like scheduled reorder rules, cart abandonment emails, or dynamic pricing scripts. These are deterministic systems: they follow fixed logic and execute pre-defined steps. A human still configures each rule and monitors outcomes.
Agentic commerce goes further. An AI agent in a commerce workflow can do the following all without a human in the loop for any individual step:
- evaluate multiple suppliers simultaneously
- choose the best option based on real-time price and availability
- negotiate terms within defined parameters
- execute payment using digital assets
- log the transaction
The agent is goal-directed, not rule-directed.
This distinction matters for infrastructure design. Systems built for human-initiated transactions are not inherently suited to the frequency, speed, or identity model that agents require.
